Chengdu Shuangliu Airport Terminal Upgrade Nears Completion, Aviation Economy Exceeds 100 Billion Yuan

Recently, the decoration and renovation work of the Departure Hall in Terminal 1 of Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport has entered its final stages. A year ago in September, Terminal 1 of Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport began a comprehensive renovation, and now it will welcome passengers with a new look.

Even though the terminal is still under renovation, the aviation economy in Shuangliu District is accelerating. In recent years, Shuangliu District has been promoting the transformation of the flight area, cargo area, and Terminal 1, creating a comprehensive service system at the station front that integrates operational services and immersive experiences. Reporters from China Business News learned that Shuangliu District has achieved an annual aviation industry scale exceeding 100 billion yuan.

Promoting the Construction of Six Major Functions of Domestic Commercial Aircraft

On September 19th, the domestically produced large aircraft C919 successfully took off from Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport and, after a 2-hour and 8-minute flight, successfully landed at Lhasa Gonggar International Airport in Tibet. This flight of the C919 was not only a comprehensive test of its high-altitude operation performance but also a strong proof of Shuangliu District's capabilities in supporting the research and test flights of domestic commercial aircraft.

During this flight mission, the C919 simultaneously carried out the development and test flights of key systems for high-altitude operation such as environmental control, avionics, and power plants, as well as adaptability checks for high-altitude airports. It is worth noting that Shuangliu District not only witnessed the first flight of the C919 in Lhasa but also undertook the "circumnavigation of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau" demonstration flight mission for the domestically produced regional aircraft ARJ21. Since August 21st of this year, the ARJ21, starting from Chengdu Shuangliu, has flown to several high-altitude airports, fully verifying its operational capabilities in extreme environments. Especially on August 25th, the ARJ21 took off from Shuangliu International Airport and arrived at the world's highest civilian airport in terms of altitude—Daocheng Yading Airport—in just 44 minutes, once again verifying the ARJ21's performance in high-altitude environments.

Reporters learned from the modern aviation industrial park operated by COMAC Sichuan Company that the park is加快推进 the construction of the "six major functions" of domestic commercial aircraft, including aviation operations, aviation maintenance, aviation training, aviation material storage, scientific research functions, and industrial services. The park is committed to building customer service and operational support capabilities for the southwestern, northwestern, and Southeast Asian regions of China, promoting the safe and high-quality development of the large aircraft industry in Sichuan.

Shuangliu District plays multiple roles in the research and development and test flights of domestic commercial aircraft. According to COMAC, Shuangliu District not only undertakes the takeoff and landing tasks for models such as the C919 and ARJ21 but also actively participates in customer service, aviation material support, maintenance support, and flight training, providing strong support for the full life cycle management of domestic commercial aircraft.

Aviation Industry Leaders Gather

As an important aviation hub in the western region of China, Shuangliu District has achieved significant success in aviation operation services, aviation maintenance manufacturing, and aviation logistics in recent years. In 2023, the district achieved an aviation industry scale of 117.09 billion yuan.

The premise for the continuous development of Shuangliu District's aviation industry is the gathering of a group of leading enterprises and the introduction of key projects. Currently, Shuangliu Aviation Economic Zone has introduced a number of key projects and major platforms, such as SF Western Air Cargo Hub and Civil Aviation Airworthiness Certification Center, and has completed and put into operation 31 key projects, including the Sichuan International Aero Engine Bonded Maintenance Base and COMAC Large Aircraft Demonstration Industrial Park.Particularly noteworthy is that Shuangliu District has also made significant breakthroughs in the aircraft disassembly and recycling industry. On August 29th of this year, the Airbus Full Lifecycle Service Center in Shuangliu District welcomed its first aircraft disassembly and recycling business, marking a solid step forward for Shuangliu District in the field of aviation circular economy. The rise of this industry not only helps to achieve resource recycling and sustainable development but also brings new growth points to Shuangliu District's aviation industry.

According to the person in charge of the Aviation Economic Zone Management Committee, Shuangliu District will continue to promote aviation maintenance to participate in the global industrial chain division of labor, striving to basically build a one-stop maintenance base for domestically produced large aircraft and a global highland for aviation maintenance industry by 2027, and promote the aviation maintenance industry scale to reach 20 billion yuan by 2030.

In the "Airport·Cloud" urban living room, the reporter witnessed the entire process of the aircraft taking off and taxiing on site. It is adjacent to the runway of Shuangliu International Airport, not only has a superior geographical location, but also has become an important window for observing the development of the aviation industry. Here, you can clearly see planes taking off one after another. It is reported that after the completion of the quality improvement and renovation project of Shuangliu Airport, the aviation transportation capacity of Shuangliu District will be further strengthened.
